Frequently Asked Questions

Pandy and Mt Blanc Welcome to the 2007/2008 season of the Pistoff Eurosnow Pages!!

Always remember that as a Pistoff Eurosnowpages VIP you will receive important snow bulletins on a monthly basis and avalanche reports when necessary. If you have not joined Pistoff's popular VIP mailing list, please do so now. We are always open for ideas and suggestions. Please use the feedback page to send them to us!

We constantly get a lot of comments regarding the colors and pictures used on this site. It is of course impossible to know exactly what the pages will look like on different computers and with different monitors, but the pages should now be even better than last season. If you disagree, please use the feedback page and state what the problem is and what resolution you used on your computer when the problem occured.

Pistoff FAQ

This is the section you should read before sending me an e-mail. It's possible somebody has asked the same question before.

Q: Where can I find information about your copyright and privacy policy?
A: You can click on the copyright statement on each page or click right here.

Q: Why the name Pistoff?
A: Comes from "off-piste" which is turned around to "piste off", i.e. Pistoff. Any phonetic resemblances with other phrases are totally unintentional. :-)

Q: Where is the Pistoff Euroserver located?
A: For a long time they were located in Helsinki, Finland. Now they are located in Canada although managed completely from the Netherlands.

Q: How long has this site been on-line?
A: It started as a small 'finger' service back in 1990. In 1992 it became a Gopher service and it was finally upgraded to WWW in late 1993. This makes Pistoff Eurosnowpages one of the oldest snow sites in the world and it should be the oldest European Snow Report site.

Q: Why do the pages look odd and why is the text difficult to read?
A: The pages are optimized for >256k speeds, Firefox 1.5, Internet Explorere 5.5 or higher and at least 1024 x 768, 256 color resolution. If you are using something else, or if you don't have time to wait for images and backgrounds to load, the layout might indeed look different. Please inform me of any problems using the Feedback page but remember to state the resolution you were using when the problem occured. I receive statistics regarding the browsers and the resolution Pistoff readers use and I try to optimize them so that the majority (90%) is happy with the pages. Currently, most people seem to be using Firefox and IE and we have been supporting Firefox since one day after its first public release.

Q: Can I buy Pistoff T-shirts and other crap?
A: Not at the moment. It would require me to set up a small business and I don't have time for that now. Sometimes we arrange competitions where you can win Pistoff merchandise though.

Q: What is the snow situation at resort xxxx right now?
A: I have not got the faintest idea. If you can't find the information through the Pistoff pages, neither can I. New link suggestions are always welcome, though. Please ask people in the Newsgroups instead.

Q: Could you add my snow pages to your link collections?
A: Yes, if they provide something none of the links do now OR if your page does it better than a present link. Never because you have products or a single hotel or shop that you would like to promote.

Q: Will you add a link to my site if I add a link to yours from mine?
A: See answer to previous question. I do not try to have as many links as possible - on the contrary: as much information as possible with as few links as possible.

Q: May I place a link to your site on my web site?
A: Yes, please. Click here for more info and logos.

Q: May I publish the Pistoff RSS News feed on my web site?
A: Yes, of course. This is the whole idea of RSS news feeds. It is ok as long as you do not rebrand it or otherwise pretend it contains your original news. Also, you may not copy and republish the information; you must link directly to the original feed at www.pistoff.com/rss.xml. Copyright notice

Q: Where can I find your privacy policy and copyright information?
A: Behind this link

Q: Where can I find Pistoff logos for my links?
A: Click here for suitable logos.

Q: Why are there so few links to American resorts?
A: This is the whole idea of the site. I set up the Pistoff EUROsnowpages back in 1993 after I discovered there were lots of snow links to American resorts but hardly any in Europe. There are other snow servers covering America. I try to focus mainly on Europe and why not Asia and Australia as well.

Q: Should I link to www.pistoff.com or www.pistoff.com
A: You should use www.pistoff.com. There might be other site names redirected to this site as well but they might not be active forever.

Q: What is the overall policy of the Pistoff pages?
A: The goal is to maintain the high quality of the Pistoff Eurosnowpages and therefore, I am not trying to add as many links as possible. New reciprocal links will be added if the content provider can offer high quality pages containing useful information that does not exist in a better format elsewhere. The Pistoff Eurosnow Server is strictly non-commercial, so no commercial deals will be made with any service provider.
